Alfred of St. Ruan's has lived his life in the seclusion of the monastery. But a badly wounded knight on a mission from the Elvenking, a beautiful and mysterious stranger who walks as both woman and beast, and a warrior king call him out of the cloister's walls into the wars and storms of the world. For he is neither mortal nor human, though he has long tried to live as both; and he can deny neither his nature nor his powerful magic.

...and it's very "fanficcy."To put it another way, if you like m/m slashfics, you'll probably like this. It's more limeish than lemonish (i.e. Nothing graphic) but the main character, Alf, is constantly fetishized, sexualized and placed in gratuitous sexual jeopardy. He also has very yaoish bonds with, for example, the young novice Jehan, or Alun the elf rider who initiates the plot. There's an elf woman thrown in there, but she seems to be mostly there to give Alf something to resist. Tarr's clearly done her research on the time period and her writing style is great - deceptively simple and evocative at once - but m/m slash doesn't do much for me and I'm also not a huge fan of elves, though I can stand them if done right. I'll probably finish this book, but can't see myself checking out the rest of the series.

The Isle of Glass The Hound and the Falcon Book 1 eBook Judith Tarr Reviews
The story was engaging, but it was confusing at times especailly where there was some "elf magic" shape-shifting or non-traditional communication occurring.
Enjoyed it,as I always do.Characters real and human, even they are not.Looking forward to more of Alf's adventures as he searches for himself.
As a fantasy/sci-fi series "The Hound and the Falcon" by Judith Tarr of which this book, "The Isle of Glass," is the first of three is among the greats. A little lower than LOTR by J.R.R.Tolkien, the Dune chronicles by Frank Herbert, the Ender series by Orson Scott Card and the Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is by my estimation on par with Mordant's Need by Steve Donaldson and the Amber chronicles by Roger Zelazny. As a work of historical Fantasy, I've not found it's equal. I'd read it years ago; stumbled upon it quite by accident in a bargain book, dump bin. When I saw it was available for the and at an exceptionally good price for a edition book, I knew I had to get it along with the other two books in the trilogy. If you love history but wish the characters were more fleshed out give this series a try. If you love a good story with adventure, heroes, villains, fencing, chases, escapes and yes kissing give it a try.
Judith is an amazing writer. Her descriptions and the emotional nature of the story will leave you breathless.
This is an extraordinary book in how seriously and accurately it depicts the Medieval world - while having a hero who is an elf with a religious vocation. Alf's journey from security and certainty into danger and doubt is uniquely his own, but thoughtful readers can relate to him. Author Judith Tarr gives us other memorable characters too, and they relate to each other in varied ways, but believably. If there's anything or anyone two-dimensional in this tale, it's not cardboard two-dimensionality, but that of stained glass luminous.
This is a great book and a great trilogy, from a great author. Judith Tarr's epic tale weaves together magic, religion, politics, and world history in much the same practical, believable way that Orson Scott Card fuses supra-human abilities/future technology together with sociology and political science in his novels.
Another interesting characteristic of both authors is how their hero's successes and failures, to spite their impressive abilities, derive from the strengths and weaknesses of their personal relationships. While Card usually tends to give (imho) a fairly cerebral treatment of this dynamic, Tarr treads the intricacies of human emotion and decision-making with deep feeling and intensity.
When you buy this book, you might as well go ahead and get the other two books in the 'Hound and the Falcon' trilogy, because you WILL be drawn into the journey.
For me, this was a sweet and hopeful book. It was, and I suspect will continue to be, interesting to watch Alf grow and change. I look forward to the next book.
