What happens when someone you've known for years suddenly becomes a stranger? One woman deals with the reality of watching the man she loves struggle with losing himself.

combat related ptsd willie gray story Melvina Gray Books

Written by the grieving widow of a Viet Nam combat veteran who suffered from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this book might well have been written by any woman who endured years of physical, verbal and emotional abuse at the hands of the man she loved. As a social worker who worked for years with military victims and perpetrators of spousal abuse I was only all too familiar with the signs of this often, very hidden, social problem. Melvina Gray vividly brings it all to life. What is the most striking of her life with Willie Gray, however, was the deep devotion she showed for this man tortured for many years by the horror of his memories of combat service which he found so difficult to control.

In reading this book many a medical or mental health professional might find themselves utterly and completely frustrated why anyone who would stay with someone who could be so dangerous as to threaten their life by ready access to firearms which could easily have been discharged before, during and/or after a nightmare or intrusive thought. When you read the final chapters, however, you see just how much this woman (the author) really loved her man and stood by him through thick and thin. In Chapter 9, for instance, she admitted that: "It was sad that he would get so furious toward us, the ones that he held closest to his heart. It was also sad to know that he couldn't even remember what he was so angry about sometimes. For some reason, I would always let forgiveness flow through my heart and cherish him anyway." Melvina Gray ends her book by stating: "We love and miss you, Willie" after he had passed away.

Following this the author very importantly references several resources containing information about PTSD including a pamphlet titled the READJUSTMENT PROBLEMS AMONG VIETNAM VETERANS:The Etiology of Combat Related Stress Disorders by Jim Goodwin, Psy.D. She wants to make it clear that many of the symptoms that Willie Gray possess were because he was not a well man both physically and emotionally. She loved him very dearly nonetheless and in this book it truly showed. I would highly recommend it.

combat related ptsd willie gray story Melvina Gray Books Reviews

I purchase this book from Melvina Gray while she was selling them at Dobbins AFB. This is the first book in over 50 years of reading I could not finish, because it is so poorly written. There are 62 errors, grammatical, spelling, syntax, you name it in the first 50 pages! The story does not follow a simple plot line. For instance, she mentions her son is at boot camp, then sometime later, she mentions he is now living at home. Well, what happened. She also, talks about the tumultuous relationship with Willie and how she removed him from her life. But all of the sudden they are married. Nothing new about this story line, many other books are written about PTSD. What you realize fairly early on, this is not particularly a love story. But a weak willed woman who will apparently settle for any type of relationship, even abusive. This book will go in the trash can. Not worth passing on to some other poor unsuspecting reader! I want to rate it a zero, but that is not an option, which is the only reason it gets a one.
